Free weekend in Tokyo using Hilton points

01-30-2016 Burning points

After a business trip to Seoul we decided to spend the weekend in Tokyo, a place we had always wanted to visit. We compared a few hotel options and ended up choosing the Hilton Tokyo for its location. Thanks to our stays at Hilton properties last year, we now have Gold status and plenty of Hhonors points to spend.

Burning: Standard Reward or Points & Money?

There were two options for burning points at the Hilton Tokyo: Points & Money or a Standard Reward. The Points & Money option gave more value, but we ended up selecting the Standard Reward as we have many hotel points available across all our hotel accounts. You could argue that this was not the best value, but taking into account hotel location, free breakfast and our complimentary room upgrade giving Executive Lounge access, we believe this was a good way to burn points.

Standard Reward
  • Room rate: $199
  • Points needed: 50,000 points
  • ⇒0.40 ¢/point ($199/50,000 points)
  • ⇒83% of avg. Hhonors point value realized
Points & money
  • Room rate: $199
  • Points + dollars needed: 20,000 points + $97
  • ⇒0.51 ¢/point ($102/20,000 points)
  • ⇒106% of avg. Hhonors point value realized

Summary: two decent options for burning points in Tokyo
